What is a firewall?

Firewall are security systems that are designed to control access between two networks by several techniques. Forewall development is splitted into two main types: network level and application level.

Firewalls prevent unauthorised access and block data from outside the network while allow users within the network to communicated with other networks. They also act as a security control point.

However firewalls have limitations. They are generally unable to protect against damage caused by users within the network or attacks which come with applications. They offer little protection against many computer viruses.

ไฟร์วอลล์ (Firewall) คืออะไร

ไฟร์วอลล์ เป็นระบบหรือกลุ่มของระบบที่บังคับใช้นโยบายการควบคุมการเข้าถึงเครือข่ายระหว่างสองเครือข่าย ซึ่งมีวิธีการแตกต่างกันไปแล้วแต่ระบบ โดยไฟร์วอลล์มีด้วยกัน 2 ประเภท คือ ระดับเครือข่าย (Network level firewall) และระดับแอพพลิเคชั่น (Applivation level firewall)

ไฟร์วอลล์ สามารถป้องกันการล๊อกอินจากภายนอกเครือข่ายที่ไม่ได้รับอนุญาตทำการปิดกั้นไม่ให้ข้อมูลจากนอกเครือข่ายเข้ามาภายในเครือข่าย แต่ยอมให้ผู้ที่อยู่ภายในเครือข่ายติดต่อกับโลกภายนอกได้ และเป็นศูนย์รวมการรักษาความปลอดภัยและการตรวจจับ

อย่างไรก็ตาม ไฟร์วอลล์ ก็มีข้อจำกัดบางประการ อาทิ ไม่สามารถป้องกันการโจมตีที่ไม่ได้กระทำผ่านไฟร์วอลล์ (เช่น การโจมตีจากภายในเครือข่ายเอง) และไม่สามารถป้องกันการโจมตีที่เข้ามากับโปรแกรมประยุกต์ต่าง ๆ นอกจากนี้ ยังไม่สามารถป้องกันไวรัสได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพอีกด้วย
